2010 Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting (WPGM) of American Geophysical Union will be held in Taipei, Taiwan, on 22-25 June 2010. See http://www.agu.org/meetings/wp10/ . Abstract submission deadline is 25 February 2010.

Monsoon Climate Variability and Predictability (Session A05) is convened by Mong-Ming Lu (CWB, Taipei), Jianping Li (IAP, Beijing), Lisa Goddard (IRI, Palisades NY USA).
This session invites contributing authors to present the up-to-date researches on the variability and predictability of monsoon climate. The focus will be on Asian, Australian and Western North Pacific monsoons. The key areas are: probabilistic monsoon prediction and multi-model ensembles; predictability of monsoon variations on sub-seasonal, seasonal and interannual to interdecadal time scales; physical and dynamical processes responsible for monsoon variability; extreme climate and weather events in monsoon systems; and observational findings.
Changing Statistics of Tropical, Mid-latitude and Polar Pacific Storms (Session A16) is convened by Bin Wang (IPRC, Hawaii) and Hans von Storch (GKSS, Germany).
The session deals with the analysis of changes in storminess in the historical past, in recent decades and in possible futures. The term "storms" refers to tropical cyclones, baroclinic mid-latitude storms as well as polar lows. Methodical problems relate to data inhomogeneity, to proxy representativity and to length of data sets. Changes are studied by using proxy data, historical data, re-analyses and dynamical or empirical downscaling products. Attribution studies for assessing causes for detected changes are welcome. Also, the impact of storms on the marine environment will be dealt with.
The Tropics in Past and Future Climates (Session GC03) is convened by Chia Chow (RCEP, Taipei), John Chiang and Shih-Yu Lee.
The tropics play a fundamental role in the mechanisms of global climate change. We invite submissions-observations, modeling, and theory - that elucidate the dynamics of the maintenance of the large-scale tropical climate, and mechanisms determining its changes in past and future climate scenarios. We are interested in new and emerging ways that the tropical climate is viewed, for example: how the tropical rainfall responds to greenhouse or other climate forcings; how midlatitude eddies are linked to the Hadley circulation; how coupled ocean-atmosphere-land systems respond to orbital forcing; and the role of the tropics in various paleoclimate scenarios.
El Nino: Recent Advances in Theory, Impact, Prediction, and Modeling (Session OS06) is convened by Jin-Yi Yu (UC Irvine, USA), Soon-Il An (Yonsei University, Korea) and Harry Hendon (BMRC, Australia).
El Nino continues to be a focus of research into tropical climate variability. Recent studies emphasize differentiating El Nino events whose warming is confined to the central Pacific from those in the eastern Pacific. This emerging view offers a new framework to reconsider El Nino's dynamics, predictability, and interactions with global climate, such as monsoon, Indian Ocean, typhoon. It is also of great interest to utilize this new framework in projecting future El Nino activity, interpretating paleoclimate El Nino record, and to aid further developments of climate models. Studies on all aspects of El Nino are solicited.
Multi-scale Organization of Tropical Convection: Year of Tropical Convection (YOTC) (Session A14) is convened by Huang-Hsiung Hsu (Nat'l Taiwan U., Taipei), Mitch Moncrieff (NCAR, Boulder CO USA), Yukari N. Takayabu (U. Tokyo, Japan) and Duane Edward Waliser (JPL, Pasadena CA USA).
The representation of tropical convection remains a serious challenge to the skillfulness of weather/climate prediction. Enormous opportunities are afforded by the unprecedented wealth of observations, hi-resolution modeling, and advances in theory and analysis of deep convection and its multi-scale organization. This session on YOTC is aimed at encouraging dialogue on the above issues, with contributions sought that highlight observational and modeling advances associated with this ongoing project. See http:www.ucar.edu/yotc/ .
