I'm leading Global Hydrodynamics Lab, as a part of Global Hydrology Group, in Institute of INdustrial Science, The University of Tokyo. We mainly focus on the dynamics of land waters from local to global scales.

Research Interests

Global Hydrodynamic Modeling

My major research topic is hydrodynamic modeling of surface waters at the global scale. The physics of surface water flow is relatively simple, but considerable efforts are required to represent complex river and floodplain topography which governs the surface water flow. My approach is the full-use of high-resolution satellite-based hydrographical datasets, which are available at the global scale. The goal of my study is to realistically simulate/predict the surface water hydrodynamics (river discharge, water level, flooded area) by proper approximation of the river and floodplain topography.

Remote sensing of surface waters

In addition to the global hydrodynamic modeling work, the global-scale observation of surface waters is essential to understand the global hydrodynamics. I'm using some satellite products (DEM, water mask, inland water altimetry) for the validation, calibration, and the development of the global hydrodynamic model.

--MERIT DEM: A high-accuracy global DEM

--OSM water layer: OpenStreetMap Water Layer

A high accuracy global hydrography map is released.

We developed a very high accuracy global hydrography map (MERIT Hydro), based on MERIT DEM with many water body layers. The MERIT Hydro is freely available for research and education purpose. Please visit the product webpage.

A very high accuracy global DEM is released.

We developed a very high accuracy global DEM (MERIT DEM: Multi-Error-Removed Improved-Terrain DEM), by removing multiple error components from spaceborne DEMs. The DEM is freely available for research and education purpose. Please visit the product webpage.

Global 3-second Water Body Map (G3WBM) v1.0 is released

We developed global 90-m water body map using LANDSAT GLS images. By using multi-temporal images, permanent water bodies and temporal flooded areas are distinguished. The water map is also free from observation gaps due to cloud/ice.
