My name is Alexandre Cauquoin. I study the past changes of Earth climate. In the context of current global warming, to understand and to predict changes in the Earth climate system is crucial for human societies. The study of past climates (i.e. paleoclimates), prior to the widespread availability of instrumental records, help us to understand the natural climate variability at different time scales (monthly to million years) and to provide quantitative information on the Earth climate system response to forcings like the changes in greenhouse gases concentrations. Past climate changes also document transitions between different climate states (e.g. cold, warm...), that were on long (several millennia) or shorter time scales (decades to centuries). These information on past climate variations can be compared against the recent climate changes and to assess if the current global warming is unusual or not (see the figure below).

To investigate the climates of the past, prior to the widespread availability of instrumental records, I use isotopic species measured in natural archives like ice cores, marine sediments, speleothems... under a model-data approach. I am specialised in the implementation and modelling of these isotopic species in General Circulation Models (GCM), which allow to better understand the interactions between the different compartments of our climate system and to make projections of future climates for IPCC reports. I have also experience in the extraction and measurements of these isotopic species in polar ice cores.

I have worked on the implementation of water stable isotopes (H216O, H218O and HDO) in the German fully coupled model MPI-ESM for paleoclimate studies. I have also been able to add the tritium in the French atmospheric GCM LMDZ, especially to work on the origin of water masses (stratosphere, troposphere...) that arrive over Antarctica. Moreover, I measured and analysed the beryllium-10 concentration in the EPICA Dome C ice core for linking polar and ocean climate variations over great climatic transitions. I work now at the Institute of Industrial Science (IIS), The University of Tokyo, for implementing the water stable isotopes in the Japanese coupled model MIROC and to perform an isotope-enabled model inter-comparison project. I am interested in various climate topics, including the reconstruction of climate variations of the last 2000 years, the isotope-climate relationships in polar ice cores for glacial-interglacial climate variations and the understanding of the processes controling the isotope signals in water vapor through model-data comparisons.
